Cal|ci|to|nin [↑ Calc-, ↑ -ton u. ↑ -in (3)], das; -s, -e; Syn.: Thyreocalcitonin: körpereigenes Peptid-Hormon aus 32 Aminosäuren, das als Gegenspieler des Parathyrins den Calciumspiegel im Blut senkt u. damit zur Biomineralisation beiträgt.

Calcitonin
 
das, -s, Thyreocalcitonin, in den parafollikulären Zellen (C-Zellen) der Schilddrüse und entsprechenden Zellen der Nebenschilddrüsen gebildetes Hormon. Es ist für die Regulation des Calciumspiegels im Blut von Bedeutung: Durch seine Ca2+-senkende Wirkung, durch verstärkte Einlagerung des Ca2+ in die Knochensubstanz oder Hemmung der Ca2+-Freisetzung aus den Knochen ist es ein Antagonist des Parathormons. Calcitonin ist ein Polypeptid mit einer bekannten Sequenz von 32 Aminosäuren.
